charcoal sketches
Quick sketches. An exercise in tone, form and composition.
Charcoal on paper 2017
At first glance this is quintessential Venice in Winter: damp, slightly foggy, always mysterious.
The total lack of people or movement is emphasised in the flat surface of this backwater canal.
Nothing is important here, no one aspect is given greater importance over another.
Still and quiet.
When I look at this sketch I feel calm yet empty .. a silent void.
Old dreams that remain out of reach. Half-forgotten.
Sadness and loss.
I'd lost my father a few months earlier, with whom I had a close bond since losing my mother 19 years before.
